8 SEC Rivalries That Will Flourish After OU and Texas Join The SEC

I have no idea how the divisions and/or pods may work out. I favor "pods," by the way, because the term really pisses off Mazeppa. Anyway, I assume there will be considerable amounts of politicking within the SEC about scheduling "every season" opponents/rivals.

I personally am in favor of each school having 3 or 4 permanent opponents then rotating through the rest of the conference.

But I like the idea of pods, only because we could call Alabama's pod the Tide Pod.

I heard the SEC commissioner doesn't want SEC teams waiting for long periods of time before they play each other so divisions of four teams seems logical to me. If that happens will there be built in rivalries or will there just be a standard rotation? As a fan I think a OU-LSU on thanksgiving weekend is a home run. Playing Arkansas or Missouri on Thanksgiving weekend is a waste of revenue. OU will curb stop both teams more often than not. Similar to OU-OSU. As it is now OU really only has one rivalry game and that is Texas. The rest are one sided in OU's favor. I personally wouldn't mind having Nebraska as a permanent non conference game but I dont see that happening. It would be nice to start off in the SEC with Texas and LSU as our permanent conference rivals.

If they want a probable win they will want to play Arkansas. What game will people across the nation want to watch? I guarantee it will be OU-LSU. That game will also generate more revenue. I can only imagine how loud both stadiums will be for that match up.

Arkansas has not been a "guarantee" win for LSU the way that OSU has been for OU. I remember when Arkansas went to Baton Rouge and beat LSU the last week of the regular season before LSU went on to win the National Title under Les Miles. LSU leads the series 42-23-2, certainly not the dominance OU has experienced over OSU. OSU may NEVER reach 23 wins against OU.

Not looking fwd to OU-Arky. Any Sooner fan that lived thru the disastrous 1978 Orange Bowl (and lived in Eastern OK), remembers how insufferable the pig fans can be. Your point is valid but I think that it would be rare for teams to draw Bama and Georgia as rotating opponents in the same year. If one is your permanent rival, then obviously there will be some years where you play both, but I don't think that would happen regularly.

We'll get Texas as a permanent rival, for sure. We'll probably get Missouri, based on our history in the Big 6/7/8/12 and our location. Arkansas or A&M make sense for the third rival, but both of them have history with other schools. Arkansas will get Texas and two of A&M, Missouri, Ole Miss, LSU, or OU. A&M will get Texas, LSU, and either us or Arky. Regardless, the goal is for each school to rotate through the conference twice every four years. So, we won't go eight years without playing a particular school.

A couple of my observations, fwiw

I agree that the cocktail party staying intact @ Jacksonville as an annual game is safe since Georgia/FL are likely to be in the same 4-team contingent.
Bama/Tennessee is safe also for the same reason—the game has lost some of its luster due to TN being down,but I think Josh Heupel is going to shake things up on Rocky Top and that they will gradually make this a competitive series again.
Though a game of little value, Bama/Vandy will return to being the annual matchup that it was for so long until it ended back in the early 2000’s. Hey everyone enjoys an occasional trip to Nashville, right?
Auburn/Georgia as a rivalry game might be the biggest potential casualty—it is the South’s oldest rivalry, however outside of Dixie the game really is not a huge draw.

I don't see it staying divisional and having teams play once a decade. Maybe they go to some strange 10 game conference schedule that keeps a rival game. But somewhere a rival game will lose. And I doubt you see If Georgia is in a Bama/Auburn pod. They probably lose an annual game with Florida and regionally with South Carolina

Meh, I wouldn’t count on A Lot. I was with OBB til he threw that in the post. Depending on how they format the future divisions , pods, scheduling, etc…the first ten years of the New SEC could see GA/OU, Bama/LSU, GA/LSU, Bama/TX, FL/OU, TN/TX, maybe even A&M from the new west the way they are buying players if things keep current re NIL the way it is now, which I doubt, and TX also in that regard. Many teams from the SEC have made the trip to the SECCG in the 21st century, even Misery.

But it’s always fun in the season every week to play em out in the best conference in the country to get there.

That is very plausible. Would the SEC throw Aggy this bone as a price of bringing UT in? Does A&M have this much pull after only having been in the conference for 11 years? A&M didn't join the SEC to play us, UT, and Missouri. They want to be at what they see as the cool kids table-the original SEC.

Plus, I would think Arkansas would also want the LSU-Ole Miss-MSU pod, unless their heart is set on playing Texas every year once again. Arky has seniority on Aggy.

This would make A&M look bad. Everyone in college football, including the Longhorns, wants to bring this series back in the SEC as a yearly game. I don't think Aggy cares about how they look, though.

Brother, we see eye to eye on a lot of things, but this is not one of them. I like soccer. Mostly the European leagues and international ball, but it’s a great sport. The good ole USA is the odd ball when it comes to soccer. And we’re the only ones that call it soccer anyway. It’s truly football. My biggest beef with soccer? Boring as fuck. Anyone who says baseball or golf is boring has never sat through a 0-0 soccer match. After all that running about you go to a shootout. Just start with the damn shootout and save us all the yawns.

I hear ya man. I see why some think it’s boring for sure. Not as boring as baseball or golf (that’s just my opinion), but I can still see it that way. When I was playing as a kid, it was never boring. Just a fun game. I quit when was 13-14 to focus purely on wrestling, and then didn’t start following the sport again until about 10 years ago. And it was kind of boring for sure. But for me, when I started paying enough attention to understand the strategy, formations, etc…, it became less boring, even with a scoreless game. As with any sport, when you take time to understand the games within the game, you’ll likely find more interest in it. Again, just my opinion.

Here's the way I see the pods going if that's where we go.

Bama, Tennessee, Auburn, Vanderbilt in pod 1

OU Texas, Missouri, Arkansas in Pod 2

Texas A&M, LSU, Mississippi, Mississippi State in Pod 3

Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Kentucky in Pod 4

This set up keeps most of your regional rivals every year. If Texas A&M is okay with being in the OU/Texas/Arkansas pod it would be perfect regionally and you could put Missouri in the other pod with LSU/Miss schools.

Is this perfect? No. Auburn loses big rivals like LSU and Georgia every year. Kentucky is cut off from playing Tennessee schools every year which probably makes more sense for them regionally. But if you stick with the 9 conference games and play everyone in the other pods twice over 4 years you play everyone in conference home and home over a 4 year period.

If we stick with divisional set up there's a chance OU doesn't even play a team like say Bama in Norman for another 8 years or so.

Those Pods are correct and you could have one permanent rival still, which would allow Auburn and Georgia to keep playing. The SEC is NOT going to give up this rivalry no matter what. Also, Auburn and LSU are not really big rivals. They did not play that often until the SEC went to divisions in 1992.

I can see A&M being in a separate pod from Texas to keep their "individual identity" but playing Texas every year as a permanent rival, similar to Auburn and Georgia.

This is where I hope the SEC eventually figures out the best way to go is no pods at all with 3 permanent rivals. Pods are too rigid, works well for some teams in the pod, but not all. A handful of permanent rivals allows this flexibility. No need to have them if you are divisionless.
