The Mississippi Department of Human Services has filed a civil lawsuit against 38 individuals or entities it says took welfare money from the state “for their enrichment or for other private purposes incompatible with … the alleviation of poverty.”…

Both nonprofits paid Marcus Dupree large salaries to act as a “celebrity endorser” and “motivational speaker,” and the New nonprofit effectively purchased and paid the mortgage on a 15-acre property in Flora in the name of Dupree’s nonprofit, Marcus Dupree Foundation, but which the athlete used as his private residence.

The lawsuit asks for $371,000 in damages from Dupree and his foundation.

Thought this may had to do with the 100 BILLION, with a B, that came out about Covid relief funds from different entities in the country that was misused recently.

That’s a fair criticism given his history. This situation, however, seems more like a cautionary tale about the way celebrities are treated. The way it unfolded I think Dupree, Favre, and many others genuinely didn’t know the money was being mishandled.

The New family certainly should have known better! I don’t understand if they thought entangling others with higher profiles than theirs would somehow insulate them or what.

Celebrities, especially in North America and Europe are conditioned to accept handouts too easily. When someone is paying to use another’s NIL the motives are, more often than not, impure. It’s a dirty business.

Or just plain stole it. That happens often enough. Then there is this gem from OKC based Feed the Children which came up with JC Watts few years ago:

He (Watts) specifically complained that Feed the Children had paid $2.3 million to "Christian bands, artist managers, a Christian comedian and a husband and wife Christian marriage therapist team" since January 2013.

The payments to 34 artist groups were part of a fundraising plan to attract child sponsors during performances, he noted.

On its website, Feed the Children tells potential sponsors, "For just $34 a month, you can provide food and other life essentials to a child in need."

"All money except $82,000 was paid upfront before a single show was performed," Watts wrote. "Only one group completed the agreed upon number of performances committed to FTC. At least 6 groups performed zero dates. Additionally it appears that the bands were allowed to also charge a fee to the church or place they performed in addition to a ticket fee and none of those dollars flowed back to FTC.

"We also found that the hired groups/individuals were not appropriately registered to fund raise on behalf of FTC," he wrote. "We have so far been unsuccessful in our efforts to recover moneys related to the nonperformance of these contracts ... "

Watts wrote he canceled a contract to pay an additional $1.8 million in 2016 to solicit sponsors during performances by the Christian pop rock band Newsboys.

I don't know whatever came of this, but it certainly made me rethink giving money to "feed the hungry" programs and Christian bands in general. Pretty sure they were not doing what Jesus would do.

Larry Jones was certainly a piece of work. I can remember before he started "feeding the children" how he (on his TV show) would stand outside porn shops and movie theaters ranting and raving about them. I guess FTC booted him a while back but according to the Watts report they were just as bad after he was gone.

Allen Jones (Larry's son) made out like a bandit too, with the million dollar loan he defaulted on, phantom job etc. Sounds like he had a heck of a boat too -
