  • 6-time champs OU softball Fall 2022 & Spring 2023

I'll start it again. It's a new season/school year, after all. I predict we're finished with incoming transfers for this upcoming year. 5 players graduated from last season(+Donihoo and T Coleman portaled out). 4 frosh and 3 transfers coming in. So, our roster is the same size it was this year. It will be interesting to see how all the new players perform. I hope we will schedule more ranked teams during regular season than we did this past year. That would cut down on the run-rule shortened games, and let us play more innings, or like was previously mentioned, play more double headers.

Here's to getting 3 in a row for Patty and the Sooners!

I expect another National Championship from Patty and her outstanding team of lady Sooners. Dominate girls! Again.

I'm sure we all do, but if we do win again, be prepared for the even louder howls and screams coming from the PAC and SEC, begging and demanding for the WCWS to move out of OKC.

They can howl and scream all they want but it won't do any good until 2035 when the contract expires.

Maybe we can help get them to move it to Shawnee in 2035...or Purcell.

So don't win it next year. Makes sense. :)

Right! Making the SEC and PAC unhappy(again) would be a most unforgivable act.

You're a brave soul! Thanks for starting the 2022/2023 season thread!!!!
I noticed on the contents page that your last season garnered 7,535 posts and 100,990 views.
I think that is topped only by the Realignment Thread---but of course that has been ongoing for what---35 years now????

Definitely would like to see more ranked teams scheduled. I realize schedules are made well in advance but you usually know who the good teams are. I would also like to see us in that Clearwater, Fl tournament.

Next year's Clearwater tournament has the most ranked teams I've ever seen in a regular season tournament.

Glad to be here on page 1 for 22-23. Can't expect a team to win it all every year, but Gasso seems to be doing pretty well filling the voids from graduation and attrition. Looking forward to following this version of the Sooners Softballers.

Riley Boone worked a softball camp in Osage County this week with about 70 campers. They all loved her and she couldn't have been a better leader and teacher they said. Thought that was pretty cool.

The bigger question is where would they move it to? Hall of Fame Stadium is now like three times bigger than the next largest softball park currently being used for collegiate play.

I honestly thought this year would, at least in terms of The Gasso Standard, be somewhat of a "rebuilding" year. Now it looks like they're just reloading. Adding great pitching and hitting depth to complement the eeturners. They likely will be favorite to win it all again in 2023.

This one kind of surprises me because I don’t think it’s a lock that she will start. I see maybe getting some opportunities early but she is going to have to really produce if she wants to stay in the lineup.

Her stats the last 2 years:

Totally agree here. Hansen is the number one Catcher. 1B is going to be a battle between Erickson and Sanders. DP may be the only real possible starting spot and she will be battling Nugent and Lilio and the Erickson/Sanders loser at 1B for that. Although I do see her as the first off the bench when we do rest Hansen.

She may catch a little but I think Nugent has a higher ceiling. First base? I don’t think she can play the kind of defense that Patty likes. DP may be her best option but the catcher first baseman coming in Erickson is by all accounts the real deal. She better not get off to a slow start is what I am saying.

Her batting stats last season (0.405) were above every returning Sooner except Boone (0.420) and Coleman (0.429)…she had more HR’s than those 2 combined even though teams massively pitched around her. Same can be said for her 2021 stats.

Her batting average was just a tad better than Jennings and Lyons (0.402 for both)….her HR’s we’re less than those two, but her team didn’t go very far post season and teams pitched around her a lot. When they pitched to her more in 2021 she hit 25 HR’s (more than Lyons had and same as Jennings would have had if OU’s season ended when ATM’s did) ….slugging percentage over 0.950 in 2021, better than almost anyone not named Alo.

I’m not saying she’s better than those returning OU hitters….but she’s a legit power hitter that has a superb batting average. There’s a spot for her somewhere. She’ll be an above average bat in our lineup. Sander for sure and Erickson almost certainly will have a spot somewhere too…replacing whoever slumps.

One of the three portal power hitters will DH, Torres is likely 3rd, the other will likely play 1st base….someone will likely shift to outfield to stay in the lineup when Nugent, Erickson, Lilio, others rotate in.

IMO Green, and Coor will have a hard time cracking the lineup.

Brito, Boone will probably be rotated out of the lineup a lot early season so the younger players get their chances to show out. AND when Erickson does show out….one of those two will have a difficult time keeping their spot. Having said that…every year, someone slumps. Next year, whoever it is that slumps will be the person that Erickson takes over for.

I also expect to see a lot of rotation as DP, 1B, and even C early year to get younger players their audition time.

AND when Erickson does show out….one of those two will have a difficult time keeping their spot. Having said that…every year, someone slumps. This may be the first time in a very long time that we will have such power all the way up and down the line-up. Lee did get pitched around a lot---50 BB's...she was definitely A&M's big bat. And OU's opponents next year will not have that option. At first glance, we could easily have at least 7 in the line up with double digit HRs by the end of the season--possibly 8. Coleman and Boone may be the only outliers, and Coleman may make it too--she had 8 of 'em last year. My thinking then evolves into defense. While Lee does have impressive offensive numbers, her defense did let her down a bit over the last two years. I'm really looking forward to seeing if that picks up this year with the better pitching that we will have.. Listen to me--I'm talking like she's already on the team and we haven't seen her committment tweet yet! Ha!
But anyway, if the fielding picks up then we have a big one-two punch at catcher like last year, while we continue to develop Nugent and Erickson.
Another poster on another board offered up shared innings for catchers....split games or even align catchers with pitchers with best chemistry. I could see Bahl/Hansen, Storako/Lee, May/Nugent, Deal/Erickson.
So many options to choose from. Can't wait for fall ball to see what we've got!

I think her best option is DH but if by chance she gets off to a slow start I still think she may not get near the at she would have gotten at A&M or someplace else. She may open the season hotter than hell we shall see.

OU's football scoreboard against them is 2-9 I think, and there's always 0-7 in 1957, to end our 47 game winning streak, and intentional chop blocks against Granville Liggins in 1966, that injured him and knocked him out of the game (and, for the rest of the season, if I remember correctly).

Granny writhing in pain at the south end 37 yard line with a 0-0 score. Later I read a book about that '66 Notre Dame team and they admitted they tried to take him out of the game.
