I started watching during the pandemic, maybe around June 2020. Any enthusiasts on here? Still have tons to learn as far as terminology, betting, G1 vs G2. etc. Lots on FS1, FS2.

Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn. If you haven't done this, put it on your bucket list. It's a good annual event too.

Get on Twin Spires then put some $$ on the Ortiz Brothers...Irad and Jose Jr have been dominant for some time now and get some great rides. Trainer Brad Cox is young and building a hell of a career as well. Steven Asmussen has a lot of success at Remington during the Thoroughbred season. He's a good bet during that meet.

I've got a barn quilt I made on my fence of Ron Turcotte's silks from his Secretariat ride.
No doubt I'm going to participate in this thread...thanks for posting it.

Been to DelMar but I'm totally stoked to go to Keeneland next year for Breeders Cup. Such a beautiful track. Couldn't go last year, obviously.

Looks like no racing on Tv (at Saratoga) until Wed 8/4. My daughter heads to Tuscaloosa that day, interestingly.
The only races that I was watching closely yesterday were the Amsterdam Stakes and race 5, won by Rotknee. He won by 3 lengths, cool that his sire is Runhappy(owner is Matress Mac...puts tons of $$$ into racing), although there are probably 200+ of them out there sired by him.
I think Matress Mac bet 2M in the Derby and lost. hehe.Last edited by ab5sr; 08-02-2021, 05:50 AM.

Malathaat did avenge her only loss, to Maracuja in the G1 Kentucky Oaks, as they had their anticipated rematch yesterday. Some good racing, next Sat is the Traver's Stakes, highlighted by Essential Quality, the favorite in the field. Travers Stakes:
Date: Saturday, August 28, 2021
Time: 5:45 p.m. ET FOX with coverage beginning at 5 p.m.
Track: Saratoga Park Race Course – Saratoga Springs, NY
Distance: 1 1/4 miles (10 furlongs)
Surface: Dirt
Remember that Essential Quality has a decent resume of first place finishes:
Breeders' Futurity Stakes (2020)
Southwest Stakes (2021)
Blue Grass Stakes (2021)
Jim Dandy Stakes (2021)
Triple Crown wins:
Belmont Stakes (2021)
Breeders' Cup wins:
Breeders' Cup Juvenile (2020)
Prerace favorite at the Kentucky Derby in 2021, he finished fourth behind Hot Rod Charlie, Mandaloun, and Medina Spirit (who apparently won't be DQ'd from the win).
Well I hear you went up to Saratoga
And your horse naturally won
Then you flew your lear jet up to Nova Scotia
To see the total eclipse of the sun
Well you're where you should be all the time
And when you're not, you're with some underworld spy
Or the wife of a close friend wife of a close friend and
You're so vain...Last edited by ab5sr; 08-24-2021, 07:05 AM.

Great racing all day - 6 G1 races out of 13 made for a huge day. I didn't like flipping from FS2 to FS1 to big FOX and back to FS2, but it didn't take that much effort to push a button on a remote.
One strange thing happened, in the G1 Forego a horse tried to bite another horse, while they were still racing no doubt. Commentator mentioned that he's not seen it in over 40 years around the sport.

2/1 this morning.
Seems fillies can flash early and then fade quicker than colts...just my own observation, nothing scientific.

Art Collector and Maxfield in the Gr 1 Woodward today at Belmont. Great race. Art Collector won post to wire with Maxfield working into second on the turn for home. Those two are great horses that Covid and injuries have kept a bit of the shine off as duelers.
I did cash an Exacta on this one...only $45 though on a $6 bet.

We just had a granddaugher born, preemie, so my wife needs to go to NC at the EOM - looks like Del Mar for the Breeder's Cup is on the ropes or out. Keenland next year might come to frution.
I was looking at the horses in the main event...great field. I've seen most or all of these horses run, at Saratoga or the triple crown, all Grade 1 winners and champions. Essential Quality of Ncks Go look like the cream of the crop:

BREEDERS' CUP CLASSIC MOVES TO NBC PRIMETIME
Retired Racing Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens, who will be part of the broadcast team at this year's Breeders' Cup World Championships from Santa Anita Park, sees an opportunity to promote the sport as a marquee race moves to primetime on network television.
The Breeders' Cup World Championships will return to NBC Sports Group this year and the $5-million Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) will be broadcast in primetime on NBC.
"It's the first time ever that this has happened. It's a huge shot in the arm not only for NBC, but in my opinion, for the sport of Thoroughbred horse racing for all of the players to be showcased in primetime," Stevens said. "That's been the goal since there's been television to actually have a primetime horse racing event. Fortunately we have that this year. It's going to showcase the stars that we have in this sport. It needed to be done for a long time and this is the perfect venue to do it."
Stevens will team with host Tom Hammond, who was a reporter on the first Breeders' Cup broadcast for NBC in 1984, and racing analyst Randy Moss. Stevens said the riders who will be showcased in the Classic are well aware of the opportunity to promote horse racing to a primetime audience.
"Jockeys are a lot more educated today than we were back in the day in the area of marketing. They are the familiar faces. Unfortunately our horses, because of injury or early retirement because of their breeding value; it's tough for the fans to relate to the top horses over time. There's only one Zenyatta that comes along in a lifetime," Stevens said. "But these jockeys are stars of the show, along with the horses. You see these guys at most of the big races, especially the Breeders' Cup."
The Classic broadcast will wrap up 9 1/2 hours of Breeders' Cup television coverage beginning Nov. 2 from 4 to 8 p.m. EDT on NBC Sports Network and followed on Nov. 3 from 3:30 to 8 p.m. on NBC Sports Network. The day will end with the hour-long broadcast of the $5-million Classic on NBC as the Breeders' Cup returns to NBC for the first time since 2005.
Producer Rob Hyland anticipates a beautiful late afternoon backdrop for the Breeders' Cup Classic and expects plenty of daylight for the Classic, scheduled to start at approximately 8:35 p.m. EDT. With the inner training path at Santa Anita, NBC plans to use a camera mounted in a truck to track horses through the backstretch, which he believes will offer some exciting live shots and replays

*** So, there are 14 races on both Friday and Sat - perfect timing with OU having a bye. The biggest race, of course, is the Longines Classic $6 million purse, which this year is on prime time
TV.

O'Neill 4-1 4. Essential Quality Luis Saez Brad H. Cox 3-1 5. Knicks Go Joel Rosario Brad H. Cox 5-2 6. Art Collector Mike Smith William I. Mott 8-1 7. Stilleto Boy Kent Desormeaux Ed Moger, Jr. 30-1 8. Medina Spirit John Velazquez Bob Baffert 4-1 9. Max Player Ricardo Santana, Jr. Steven M. Asmussen 8-1
Kind of interesting that Knick Go is the fav over Essential Quality. Both horses are trained by Brad Cox. Bob Baffert trains Medina Sprit, currently at 4-1. He won the Kentucky Derby, but sits behind both horses. Baffert was kick out of NY racing, but is not in CA

So for today's racing, Jack Christopher, heavy favorite in the TVG Juvenile presented by TAA the winner usually earmarked as next year's Kentucky Derby favorite, unfortunately scratched due to injury. Bob Baffert, who has 3 in today's Juvenile and the new favorite name 'Corniche', is banned from Churchill Downs. pending a ruling on Medina Spirit.
