I’d much rather go this route than the way we have been the past 4 years. Have top ranked recruits commit early, shut down recruiting the position, and then in November or December watch the commit leave us at the alter for another school and have no back-up plan.

That's why I say we better come out looking like world beaters this season in order to attract recruits who are on the fence, otherwise we might be in for some disappointing future seasons, as hard as that is to fathom.

Sorry, huge post, but I'm bored waiting for the first day at my new job and I'm curious about the argument we've been having so take this for the dumb data science adjacent exercise it is.
The What: Is there a relationship between visits, decommitments and ultimately transferring?
The Why: We've been going back and forth on the effectiveness of Brent's recruiting strategy (IMO early returns are discouraging, but I'm not panicking yet) and I wanted to try to put some numbers to it.
The How:I manually coded 247's top 100 recruits in the 2019 class for whether or not they had decommitted at some point in the process, when they took their visits and whether or not they finished their career (or at least is still at) at the school they signed with. Then ran regressions, correlations and simple COUNTIFS in Excel.
The Interesting Results:
Overall, 26 of the top 100 recruits decommitted at some point and 39 ended up transferring (not just entering the portal)
Taking visits after committing is roughly a 50-50 proposition as to whether or not the recruit will stay committed (19 and 19, but some recruits took visits before decommitting from an earlier commtiment *and* after making their final commitment, hello Scooby Carter)
Only one QB decommitted during the process (Sam Howell), he ended up being one of the two QBs who did not transfer (6 QBs in top 100 recruits)
Perhaps unsurprisingly, there's a positive correlation between recruiting ranking and likelihood to transfer, maybe more surprisingly the lower the ranking, the less likely to decommit
23% (6/26) of recruits who decommitted ended up recommitting to a team they had decommitted from
30% (8/26) of decommits happened without taking a visit
Minimal correlation between decommitting at some point in the process and transferring
Next Steps I Won't Be Taking: Realistically the core of OU's class isn't going to be top 100 players, do those 101-300 kids act wildly differently? It's entirely possible and I could hypothesize that they would. This was also a weird class with Bru McCoy, Chris Steele and Scooby Carter, 2018 might've been a better choice
What Does It Mean For Our Debate? Part of what makes the argument so popular is how it involves things that can't be answered by data (A middle finger to the current state of affairs in recruiting etc.) but in my read it is simply a question of whether or not the momentum opportunity passed up by not taking in the moment visit commits (who'll then go take other visits) worth the roughly 20% loss in likelihood to decommit? Right now I would say no.
Another question that can't be answered right now is whether or not there are enough elite kids who are willing to shut it down for a family feel for two Clemsons to exist at once. Personally, I think Brent deserves at least a cycle to try it his way, but we're not seeing half the momentum other new coaches are, and that's worrisome.
If there's anything else in this "dataset" you're interested in exploring the relationship between, let me know and if you want to quote this, please use select parts to avoid making the page unreadable.

Look I dunno if his stance on committing will work or not but I’m willing to give it a chance and see if it works. In the long run it doesn’t really matter IMO.under the last regime Recruit A visits Norman and commits then visits Bama and then de-commits and goes there…is there really any difference in the end? No so I’m ok with the policy of don’t commit to us until after you’re done with all your visits.
All this teeth knashing and hand wringing in June is comical. If we’re sitting like this in December then I’ll understand it.

Does it make everyone feel better when we get guys to commit in June only to sign with other teams in February? That happened a lot with the previous staff. Also, recruiting guys rated 4-5 stars who never Developed beyond their high school talent. That also happened a lot.
I believe the recruiting, coaching, and development will be better with BV. However, we will have to wait and see. I also think the crying about recruiting is premature but if it makes you feel better, go right ahead.

I don't know what the hell is going on or who's to blame, but for those of you saying "we'll be fine" need to understand how far we're falling behind the top tier schools. I am sure BV and Lebby will field a very good team this season, but without blue chips coming in to reload we could find ourselves in 3-5 loss territory quick.
Losing all these kids that are within a few hundred miles is concerning. Yes it's possible one or two could flip but that's usually a small number if any that do.
This ship needs to get righted quickly.

If Adams took two visits to Oklahoma and one visit to Alabama before he committed to Alabama, might it just be that he liked Alabama better?
How is that a strategy failure?

Bama waa in on Adams early and consistently while we basically ignored him.
But hey. We got a 3 star lineman and a "Yamaha" tweet from Demarco this summer, so all good.Last edited by BirtDurglar; 06-29-2022, 05:39 PM.

And another thing, stop saying Jobe is from Norman. He has been staying in Norman. The two are not the same. Dude has zero legit connections to the town. Ironically the okie kids that are being bitched about wouldn’t have received offers under the other staff. I’ll give Brent and company credit for recruiting these kids. If nothing else Oklahoma High school coaches can shut the fuck up now. Their players aren’t being ignored anymore, so that’s one less thing OU has to hear about moving forward. Brent isn’t a dummy, he will be paying attention to schools whose players don’t reciprocate the attention they are receiving. P.S. only an extreme homer thought Hill was coming to OU. Let Aggie and Texas burn through their money for players that only care about getting paid. OU needs talent, but the talent has to want to become great at football. Mark my words, a lot of these kids are going to schools thinking short time and not long term. But this has nothing to do with winning people. OU does have to up their bag game, but they will bring in some talent.

Cole Adams - TBOW had WR commits from Inniss, Moore, Lemon, and had Jalen Hale ready to commit. TBOW and Simmons likely paid zero attention to Adams at all.
The new staff trying to piece WR recruiting back together again, took some time to evaluate Adams further putting OU behind in his recruiting.
It was more the previous regime screwing things up for us in ‘23 than anything with Venables and his staff.
Just another reason TBOW can get fucked. Screwed over one of the best d-line classes ever at OU for ‘22, destroyed the ‘23 class to pieces.
